Originally isolated from the marine sponge Angelas mauritianus [1]. Immunostimulant [1, 2, 3]. Potent stimulator of natural killer T (NKT) cells [4, 5]. Specific ligand of the lipid-binding MHC class I-like protein CD1d in human and mouse NKT cells [5]. Protects against LPS-induced shock [7]. Potent antitumor compound [2, 6, 8]. Biol. 81, 607 (2007) α-Galactosylceramide activates antitumor immunity against liver tumor: T. Tatsumi, et al.; Hepatol. Res. 41, 160 (2011) α-Galactosylceramide was originally isolated from an extract of the Okinawan marine sponge Agelas mauritianus . α-Galactosylceramide is a specific ligand for human and mouse natural killer T (NKT) cells and exhibits potent anti-tumor activity with murine in vivo experiments including subcutaneous implanted model and metastatic models in the liver and lung. In the liver metastatic models, treatment with α-galactosylceramide suppressed the growth of tumors and prolonged the survival term of the tumor-bearing mice. α-Galactosylceramide has been reported to show various immunological effects in infectious diseases, autoimmune disease and graft versus host disease in mice. 1 Chemically synthesized. Provided with a BSE/TSE statement. Purity by HPLC-CAD – example chromatogram on the right.
